The Netherlands defeats Italy in World Cup warm up
The Dutch team recovered from their 1-10 loss against Australia on Wednesday and beat Italy 4-2 on Thursday. After five scoreless innings, the Dutch scored three runs in the sixth. Hainley STATIA hit a two-run-single for the lead. Sidney DE JONG followed with a sacrifice fly. Pinch hitter Bryan ENGELHARDT added the fourth run through a RBI-single in the eighth. Italy scored their runs through a RBI-single by Laidel CHAPELLI and a RBI-ground out by Max DE BIASE.
Leon BOYD pitched six scoreless innings for the Netherlands. He gave up only three hits and struck out four. Dave DRAJIER, Loek VAN MIL (his fastball reached 94 MPH) and Michiel VAN KAMPEN relieved Boyd.
Anthony FIORE started for Italy. He allowed three hits, three runs and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Anthony FERRARI, Chris DI ROMA and Alessandro MAESTRIS appeared also on the mound.
