Team USA starts strong with 3-0 shutout against rival Mexico

The USA got a great pitching effort from their staff and needed just one strong offensive inning to earn a 3-0 shutout against Mexico.

The American minor leaguers scored three runs in the fifth period. They loaded the bases with two outs, through a hit by pitch, a single and a walk. Devil Rays outfield prospect Justin RUGGIANO brought them on the board, when he reached home on a wild pitch. Jayson NIX followed two batters later with a two-run-single to build up a 3-0 lead.

Jason JAMARILLO was two for four with a run scored.

Jeff KARSTENS (W 1-0), who started several games for the New York Yankees at the Major League Level in 2006 and 2007, pitched six scoreless innings of five-hit-ball. He struck out two (one walk). Chris BOOKER closed out the game for the save.

Daniel RODRIGUEZ (L 0-1) held the US team hitless for 4 2/3 innings, but lost his gameplan after that. The deciding single by NIX ended his night.
