Sydney’s David Welch no-hits Adelaide Bite in Game 1 of ABL Playoffs Round 2

The second round of the Delta Airlines ABL Playoffs started with a highlight in game one on Friday. David Welch pitched a no-hitter to lead the Sydney Blue Sox to an 8-0 shutout over the Adelaide Bite. One more win this weekend and they will clinch a spot in the championship series, which is next week. Welch gave up just three walks in nine scoreless innings, striking out ten. Overall just six base runners – three on errors – reached base against him, just one of them third base.

The offense already had provided him with a 7-0 lead after three frames. Trent D’Antonio went 3-for-5 with a homerun, two runs and four RBI. Mitch Dening drove in two. Mark Brackman took the loss for the Bite, issuing seven hits, seven runs and two base on balls in 2 1/3 innings. Rimini’s Dushan Ruzic replaced him and held the Blue Sox scoreless through 3 2/3 two-hit innings of relief.
