The Sydney Blue Sox edged out a 4-3 victory over the Adelaide Bite on Thursday and returned into sole possession of first place in the Australian Baseball League. They had taken a fast 4-1 lead after six innings before the Bite tried to come back. Trent Schmutter, who had the game-winning hit on Wednesday, drove in two. Trent D’Antonio scored twice. Scott Gladstone went 4-for-5 with a double and a RBI for Adelaide. The son of hall of famer Rich Gossage, Todd Gossage, doubled, tripled and crossed the plate two times. David Welch (W 5-0) struck out eight in six strong innings, allowing just an unearned run on five hits and a walk. Paul Mildren (L 2-6) took the loss.
Meanwhile the weather continued to play havoc with the ABL. After the heavy rain in the Brisbane area already led to the postponement of the whole series between the Bandits and the Canberra Cavalry, the Thursday matchup between the Melbourne Aces and the Perth Heat got rained out too. They will try to make it up on Sunday. To help the people in Queensland, the Canberra Cavalry with Donald Lutz and Mariekson Gregorius will play a “Fight the Floods” game at 3pm on Sunday. They will face an all-star team at the Narrabundah Ballpark. Entry is $10 with the proceeds going directly to flood relief.
