Swedish Semis: Tranås and Stockholm advance to Finals



Swedish Semi-Finals (best-of-three):

(2-1) Tranås – Leksand 3-4, 11-3, 6-5 (14)

LEKSAND stunned regular season winner TRANAS in game one of the semi-final series in the Swedish Elitserien by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh en route to a 4-3 victory and the 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. TRANAS tried to come back, but only managed single runs in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth. Hakan Börjes highlighted the decisive rally with a two-run homerun. David Leander homered for TRANAS. Tom Brice (W 1-0) issued just one run on four hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out eight. Cameron Penney (TRA) allowed just four hits and a walk in six scoreless innings. Leander (L 0-1) replaced him in the seventh and took the loss.

TRANAS came back in game two of the series, taking a fast 3-0 lead in the second and blowing the score wide open with five runs in the fourth. They won 11-3 in the end. Tony Dermendziev, Mikael Andersson and David Leander combined for six RBI. Eimantes Zickus (W 1-0) surrendered just one unearned run on three walks in five no-hit innings. Mats Jones (L 0-1) suffered the loss after eight innings, ten hits, eleven runs (9 ER) and six bb.

With the series tied at 1-1, both teams met again on Sunday with the final participation on the line. LEKSAND got off to a better start, taking a 5-1 lead thru five innings. Hakan Börjes hit another homerun for the LUMBERJACKS. TRANAS cut the deficit to 3-5 in the bottom of the sixth and tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI triple by Adeyinka Adewusi and a RBI fielder’s choice by Mikael Andersson. The match went into extra innings. After four scoreless frames, TRANAS decided the outcome in the bottom of the 14th. Andersson reached with a leadoff single to right field, advanced to third with one out on a groundout and another single, and scored the game winning run on a fielder’s choice by Eimantes Zickus. Zickus (W 2-0) not only drove in the sixth run, but also was the hero on the mound. One day after going five strong frames in game two, he went nine scoreless innings in relief of Andersson, conceding just three hits and five bb. He struck out eight. Richard Leander (L 0-1) surrendered 14 hits, six runs (5 ER) and six walks in a whopping 14 innings. He struck out eight of the 62 batters he faced.

STOCKHOLM took a fast 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game one of their semi-final series against KARLSKOGA, a rematch of last year’s finals. The BATS cut the deficit to a run in the top of the fourth, but STOCKHOLM added two more runs in the eighth to seal the 5-2 victory. Peter Johannessen scored twice. Magnus Pilegård collected three hits. Stefan Fahlin and Petter Lundberg drove in both runs for KARLSKOGA. Joakim Claesson (W 1-0) gave up ten hits, two runs (1 ER) and four bb in nine innings. He punched out seven. Jason Enewold (L 0-1) conceded five hits and three runs (2 ER) in six innings.

STOCKHOLM completed the sweep with a 7-4 victory over KARLSKOGA in game two. After both teams scored three runs over the first three frames, STOCKHOLM took the lead for good with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth. Peter and Björn Johannessen combined for five hits and five RBI. Magnus Pilegård scored three times. Christoffer Johansson scored twice for the BATS. STOCKHOLM’s starter Jakob Claesson walked nine in just four-plus innings. Thomas Claesson (W 1-0) picked up the win with three solid innings of scoreless relief. Ronny Frid (L 0-1) surrendered seven runs on 13 hits and three bb in 5 2/3 innings.
