South: Surprises in Neuenburg and Regensburg

Mannheim Tornados – Haar Disciples 3-2, 2-3

Two candidates for the top four in the southern conference of the Bundesliga settled for a split after two thrilling pitchers duels. In game one the TORNADOS overcame a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 on a RBI walk off single by pinch hitter Eddie Aucoin. They had tied the match in the sixth on a RBI double and a RBI single by Marvin Appiah and Martin Dewald. Clemens Cichocki with a RBI single and a homerun by Tony Younis had brought a 2-0 lead for the DISCIPLES. Starters Rene Franke (MAT) and Theo Gieschen (HAA) each allowed two runs in seven, respective six innings pitched. Paul Waterman received the win, Dirk Fries the loss.

The second game was similar to the first, as HAAR took a 3-0 lead until the sixth on RBIs by Clemens Cichocki, Adalberto Paulino and Nate Fish. MANNHEIM rallied in the eighth, when Alex Szalay doubled in two runs, though Elvin Tejada was thrown out at the plate on the same play, trying to score from first. Eddie Aucoin took the loss against his former team. Esequier Pie dominated in his first start, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, two runs and six walks for the win. He struck out twelve. Dirk Fries allowed the two-run double, but pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Saarlouis Hornets 4-2, 4-8

After winning game one the BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE were upset by the HORNETS in the second part of the doubleheader, but stay at the top of the standings with a 17-3 record. Mike Bolsenbroek struck out eight in eight four-hit innings to lead REGENSBURG to a 4-2 win in the first match. RBI singles by Markus Gienger and Simon Kudernatsch in the fifth and seventh decided the outcome. SAARLOUIS had tied the contest in the fourth on a two-run triple by John Patrick Carlson. Ales Keprta took the loss.

The LEGIONAERE left twelve men on base in the second to lose 4-8. SAARLOUIS overcame a 0-3 deficit through seven runs in the seventh and eighth frames. They had no chance in the beginning against REGENSBURG starter Craig Crow, who allowed just one hit in five innings, striking out nine. Reliever Benedikt Antwi blew the lead and took the loss. Sam Jew started for the HORNETS after closing out game one. He pitched five innings. Salvatore Messina received the win with four innings of relief.

Neuenburg Atomics – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 4-2, 0-10

The surprise of the weekend took place in NEUENBURG. The ATOMICS overcame a 0-2 deficit after four innings in game one and upset the HEIDEKOEPFE 4-2. RBIs by Ryan Lilly and Hagen Raetz brought the lead for the guests. NEUENBURG tied the match in the sixth on runs by Roland Widmann and Stefan Kolbe. Kolbe scored the game winner on a hit by Kim Mueller in the seventh. Michael Niemann added an insurance run on a wild pitch. Andreas Gerth started and received the win. HEIDENHEIM began with Sam Whitehead, who pitched four innings. Reliever Peter Dankerl took the loss.

The HEIDEKOEPFE got revenge in game two, using an eight-run fifth to win 10-0. Ryan Lilly provided the highlight with a two-run shot. Mike Hartley received the win, Alex Aucoin the loss.

Gauting Indians – Mainz Athletics 1-3, 4-3

The ATHLETICS failed to move into third place, losing one of two in GAUTING. MAINZ is now 12-10. The INDIANS moved to 6-12.
