South: Late Homeruns decide clash between Tornados and Legionaere

Mannheim Tornados – Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg 3-2, 0-1
After two thrilling games and two decisive homeruns each team went home with a victory.  In the first match Marvin Appiah delivered a walk-off homerun in the eleventh to lead MANNHEIM to a 3-2 win. Rene Franke started for the TORNADOS on the mound and allowed four hits, one run and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Mike Bolsenbroek got the nod for REGENSBURG. He gave up four hits, one run and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. Martin Dewald received the win, Martin Almstetter the loss.

The second part of the doubleheader saw a pitcher’s duel with Dan Husband deciding it with a homerun in the top of the tenth. Eddie Aucoin threw nine scoreless innings for MANNHEIM. He allowed just four hits and a walk, while striking out ten. Craig Crow opposed him for the first 4 2/3 frames, allowing one hits, two walks and two hit batters. He struck out three. Philipp Hoffschild replaced him and closed out the contest for the win. Craig Pycock gave up the homerun.

Crow was also in the middle of an incident at the start of game two. In the second inning he threw a head high pitch against Appiah, the two exchanged words afterwards and Crow hit im in the elbow with the next pitch. The benches cleared, but after lengthy discussions nobody was ejected and the game went on.

Heidenheim Heidekoepfe – Mainz Athletics 9-10, 15-6
The other two teams from the top four of the southern standings met in Heidenheim. They also settled for a split. The ATHLETICS with the returning Keigo Miyagi (four runs scored in game one) aboard won the first game after 13 thrilling innings by a score of 10-9. Max Boldt opened the fourth extra inning with a leadoff double and scored the go-ahead run on a Mike Larson single through the middle. Boldt had five hits in the game, including four doubles and three RBI. Martin Kipphan had hit a homerun in the eleventh. But HEIDENHEIM tied the contest once more with a sac fly by Robert Gruber. Dimitar Nassapov received the win for 5 2/3 innings of relief. Hagen Raetz took the loss.

The HEIDEKOEPFE came back strong in game two and crushed MAINZ 15-6. Simon Guehring led the team with a four-for-five performance with two doubles, a grand slam and six RBI. Each batter of the team scored at least a run. Martin Kipphan hit another homerun for the A’s, this time a three-run shot. Markus Winkler pitched seven innings for the win. Nils Hartkopf was hit hard for the loss.

Gauting Indians – Haar Disciples 5-9, 6-5
The DISCIPLES missed a chance to move into fourth place of the standings, when they won just one game in the duel against local rivals INDIANS. Both teams are located in the suburbs of Munich and concluded their subway/tram series with another split.

HAAR used a five-run fifth to win 9-5 in the first part of the doubleheader. GAUTING tried to come back in the end, but it was too late and too little. They even loaded the bases in the ninth, but closer Gregor Klinc struck out the last batter to secure the win. Theodor Gieschen got another victory. Dominik Hartinger took the loss.

The second game went on like the first one. The DISCIPLES took a commanding 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth and tried to complete the sweep. However this time, the INDIANS rally was successful. They tied the game through Johannes Jung’s RBI single in the ninth and won it in the tenth on a squeeze play by Dominik Tietz and Jonas Lord. HAAR had missed the chance to score runs in the top of the tenth, when they had loaded the bases. Matt Fuller received the win after ten innings of work. Klinc was on the losing side.

Neuenburg Atomics - Saarlouis Hornets 0-5, 1-2
After losing the last seven games in a row, the HORNETS did their job and ended the streak with two victories in NEUENBURG. The last ranked ATOMICS ended their streak of games with no runs in the second part of the twin bill last Sunday.

Seth Nowakowski put SAARLOUIS on board with a sac fly in the third inning of game one. They added four more runs till the end. Javier Perez hit a RBI double and scored another run. Torsten Dehm reached home twice. Ales Keprta got the win after eight shutout innings. Andreas Gerth took the loss.

SAARLOUIS had to work harder in the second game. Seth Nowakowski got them again an early lead with a RBI double in the third. However NEUENBURG came back right away, loading the bases and Kim Mueller delivered a RBI single. But the HORNETS scored the game winner anyway. Nowakoswki advanced the runner to third with his second double and Torsten Dehm came through with a sac fly. Sam Jew received the win in relief of Salvatore Messina. Alex Aucoin went the distance on the ATOMICS side and took the loss.
