South: Heidenheim basically secures second with Split against Tornados

The HEIDEKOEPFE nearly have secured second place in the southern conference with a split against the TORNADOS.

HEIDENHEIM scored three runs in the first period on their way to an 8-2 victory. After MANNHEIM cut the deficit to a run, the offense woke up again and added five insurance runs until the end. Besides Hagen Raetz, all batters had at least a hit. Simon Guehring and Robert Gruber scored twice. Jens Heymer drove in both runs for the TORNADOS. Peter Dankerl (HEI) pitched eight innings for the win, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. Rene Franke (MAT) allowed five hits, three runs and three base on balls in five innings to take the loss.

MANNHEIM started off strong in the second part of the doubleheader and got away with a 5-3 victory. Marvin Appiah hit another homerun for the TORNADOS, scored two runs and drove in two. Eddie Aucoin (MAT) gave up four hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings, while striking out six. Markus Winkler (HEI) was charged with eight hits, five runs (3 ER) and two walks in a complete game loss.

Mainz Athletics – Neuenburg Atomics 4-0, 8-5

The ATHLETICS solidified their spot in the top four with a sweep against last-ranked NEUENBURG.

Manuel Moeller led the home team to a 4-0 shutout in game one. He struck out ten in a seven-hit complete game. The offense needed some time to provide enough run support. Max Boldt brought the first run on the board with a sac fly in the fifth. They added three more an inning later with a two-run double by Hendrik Schewe. He scored the fourth run, when Keigo Miyagi was tagged out in a rundown between first and second. Andreas Gerth (NAT) gave up nine hits, four runs (1 ER) and two walks in eight innings. He struck out seven.

The ATOMICS actually had the better start into the second match, but MAINZ used a five-run sixth for an 8-5 win. Mike Larson decided the game with a grand slam for a commanding 8-3 lead. Keigo Miyagi received his first win of the season in relief of Dimitar Nassapov (5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 6 SO). Alex Aucoin (NAT) struck out eleven in eight innings, allowing eight runs (2 ER) on eleven hits and three walks.

Haar Disciples – Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg 1-10, 2-4

The BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE swept the Bavarian derby against the DISCIPLES on Sunday.

The REGENSBURG offense hit national team pitcher Dirk Fries hard and took a fast 8-0 lead after three innings. They added two more for a 10-1 victory. Michael Weigl delivered four hits and two RBI. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES draft pick Mike Bolsenbroek allowed just one hit, one run and a walk in six innings, while striking out seven. Fries took the loss, giving up ten runs on 15 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Clemens Cichocki relieved him with 3 2/3 innings of two-hit ball.

The LEGIONAERE got also off to a good start in the second part of the twin bill. They scored three fast runs against Theo Gieschen, who had suffered a finger injury during the warm up and left the mound in the second period. Nate Fish cut the deficit to a run in fourth, when he connected on a two-run homerun. However Klaus Hopfensperger answered with a leadoff homerun in the fifth to add an insurance run. Martin Almstetter had replaced Benedikt Antwi after Fish’s homerun and received the win.

Saarlouis Hornets – Gauting Indians 13-3, 0-11

The HORNETS missed an opportunity against a team, which fights to stay in the league, and had to settle for a split.

SAARLOUIS ran away for a 13-3 victory in game one. They stole 15 (!) bases, including five by Johannes Stockhausen. They had a 6-1 lead midway through the fourth and added five more in the sixth and ended the contest due mercy rule in the seventh. Ales Keprta won the duel on the mound against Dominik Hartinger.

The second match of the day was as lopsided as the first one, only with the winner coming from Munich. Matt Fuller led the INDIANS to an 11-0 shutout with seven four-hit innings. In addition the offense showed much better form and chased SAARLOUIS starter Salvatore Messina already in the first inning, where he had allowed four runs. Sam Jew replaced him, but could not stop the bleeding either.
