South: Heidekoepfe take over first after sweep
Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 4-7, 0-7
The HEIDEKOEPFE stunned the LEGIONAERE with two wins to take over first place in the southern conference of the Bundesliga. REGENSBURG looked tired in the two games, after finishing in fourth place at the European Cup. They now have dropped three of four games to HEIDENHEIM this year.
In the first match on Friday evening the HEIDEKOEPFE stormed out of the gates for a 4-1 lead after two periods. REGENSBURG cut the deficit to a run, but HEIDENHEIM added another three runs on the board in the fourth. Ryan Lilly hit a leadoff homerun and scored twice as well as Simon Guehring. Simon Kudernatsch hit a homerun for the LEGIONAERE. Peter Dankerl (W 9-1) got hit by a comebacker by Markus Gienger in the hand and had to leave the game. X-rays in the hospital showed no fractures. Martin Almstetter (L 4-3) never found his rhythm and got chased in the first.
They completed the two-game series on Saturday afternoon with the same outcome. HEIDENHEIM scored four runs in the third on their way to a 7-0 shutout. Hagen Raetz and Sam Whitehead each scored twice. Mike Hartley (W 1-0) pitched seven strong innings for his first win in Germany. Craig Crow (L 2-1) took the loss after four-plus innings.
Saarlouis Hornets – Mannheim Tornados 2-7, 1-5
The TORNADOS practically secured their spot in the playoffs last Sunday. They travelled to fifth-ranked SAARLOUIS and took away two victories.
In game one MANNHEIM started strong, leading 3-0 after a sac fly and a homerun by Jens Heymer and Chris Falls. The HORNETS came back and cut the deficit to 2-3 in the fourth through runs by Michael Kratz and Torsten Dehm. However MANNHEIM added four insurance runs in the fifth and sixth period to seal the 7-2 win. Paul Waterman picked up the win, Ales Keprta took the loss.
Like in the first part of the doubleheader, MANNHEIM also got off to a good start into the second. They scored four runs in the top of the first to take an early commanding lead. This was more than enough run support for Eddie Aucoin, who gave up just four hits in seven innings of work. SAARLOUIS scored their only run in the eighth through a RBI triple by John Patrick Carlson. The final score of the second match was 5-1.
Haar Disciples – Mainz Athletics 13-5, 2-3
After losing game one in lopsided fashion the ATHLETICS got away with the split, when they won game two in HAAR. They now have a 13-11 record in fourth place, three games ahead of SAARLOUIS and the DISCIPLES.
HAAR overcame a 0-4 deficit in the first match to defeat MAINZ 13-5. They tied the contest in the bottom of the third and took the lead in the fifth through five runs. They added four more till the end. Tony Younis scored four runs after reaching four times and missing the cycle by a homerun. Adalberto Paulino had three RBI. Nate Fish was two-for-four with a walk, a run and two RBI. Mike Larson had two hits and two runs for the A’s. Ted Gieschen started for HAAR and allowed one run on four hits and a walk in two innings. Gregor Klinc relieved him in the top of third and picked up the win. Manuel Moeller (L 5-5) gave up ten hits, twelve runs and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.
After the high scoring affair in game one, the second was dominated by the pitching staffs. MAINZ took a fast 2-0 lead after two innings on a sac fly by Nils Hartkopf and a RBI single by Nicolas Weichert. But the DISCIPLES had an answer left. Gregor Klinc cut the deficit in a half through a RBI single in the third and Adalberto Paulino tied the game in the sixth with a RBI single. However the ATHLETICS were the last team to score this time. They loaded the bases in the eighth against starter Esequier Pie (L 1-2) and brought the go-ahead run over the plate through a walk by Max Boldt with one out versus reliever Ted Gieschen. HAAR put the tying run on third in the bottom of the frame, but Bernd Radovic struck out to end the threat. Nils Hartkopf (W 3-2) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in a complete game victory, while striking out eleven.
Gauting Indians – Neuenburg Atomics 9-6, 10-4
For the first time this season the INDIANS celebrated twice in a doubleheader. They now have a six-game lead over the ATOMICS in the standings.
Dominik Hartinger, who hadn’t won a game this year so far, led GAUTING to a 9-6 win in the first match. He struck out 17 batters in a complete game victory. He allowed six runs on twelve hits nonetheless. The ATOMICS took twice a lead, but the INDIANS countered every time right away. David Bredhoff got them up in front 6-4 with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth. They added a few insurance runs till the end. Andreas Gerth took the loss in a sloppy game by the defenses of both teams, which combined for ten errors.
GAUTING used a five-run third to take an 8-1 lead in the second game and won finally by a score of 10-4. Matt Fuller received the win against NEUENBURG starter Alex Aucoin.
