South: Heidekoepfe finish Regular Season with 23-5 record in 1st Place
Gauting Indians – Mannheim Tornados 2-9, 2-10
Die TORNADOS won both games in GAUTING last weekend to secure third place in the southern conference standings to earn a date with the UNTOCUHABLES in the quarterfinals. They used a five-run third, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Rene Franke, to defeat the INDIANS 9-2 in game one of the doubleheader. Martin Dewald showed a solid performance on the mound to pick up the win. Dominik Hartinger was charged with the loss.
Even without their regular starter for the second match, Eddie Aucoin, had MANNHEIM no problems to complete the sweep. Paul Waterman replaced him on the mound and led them to a 10-2 win. Justin Lazarus missed the cycle by a homerun and finished with four RBI. Matt Fuller took the loss.
Heidenheim Heidekoepfe – Haar Disciples 10-1, 3-2
The HEIDEKOEPFE finished the regular season with a 23-5 record after beating the DISCIPLES in both ends of the twin bill. In the first game they already led 2-1, when they extended the lead with eight runs between the fifth and eighth frame to win 10-1. Keith Maxwell led the offense with four hits in five at bats, including a towering homerun and two doubles. Peter Dankerl allowed just three hits, a run and four walks in five innings to receive the win. Dirk Fries held the strong HEIDENHEIM offense in check for the first four periods, but lost nonetheless.
The HEIDEKOEPFE had to work much harder in the second part of the doubleheader. Andy Janzen drove in the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh in a 3-2 thriller. HAAR could have tied the game a frame later, but the combination of right fielder Robert Gruber and shortstop Ryan Lilly threw out Gregor Klinc, who took the loss, at home, trying to score from second. The DISCIPLES had taken a lead twice, but HEIDENHEIM came back every time. Markus Winkler struck out six in seven innings, while allowing four hits, two runs and a walk for the win.
The HEIDEKOEPFE draw the DORMTUND WANDERERS in the first round of the German playoffs.
Neuenburg Atomics – Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg 0-8, 2-7
The BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE finished the regular season on a high note in second place, after having won the last four games in a row. Of course, GAUTING and NEUENBURG are in the bottom parts of the standings, but the players of the reigning vice champion could do something for their self esteem.
Alexander Lauterbach hit another homerun in the first game of the doubleheader leading REGENSBURG to an 8-0 shutout. Benedikt Antwi won the duel on the mound against ATOMICS starter Andreas Gerth. Back-to-back doubles by Rodney Gessmann and Markus Ginger in the top of the second brought an early 2-0 lead for the LEGIONAERE in game two en route to 7-2 victory. Craig Crow pitched five scoreless innings for the win. Martin Brunner and Mike Bolsenbroek closed out the win. Alex Aucoin took the loss.
REGENSBURG is facing a familiar foe in the first round of the playoffs with the CARDINALS.
