The Solingen Alligators and the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe square off in the German finals, starting on Saturday. For both it would be the second German championship after 2006 respective 2009. Solingen won the northern division and then eliminated the Haar Disciples and defending champion Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg each in four games. The Heidekoepfe claimed first place in the south and swept the HSV Stealers and Stuttgart Reds en route to the best-of-five final series.
Each team can rely on a strong offense, however the pitching staffs are leading the way. The Alligators will send Harry Glynne, Chris Mezger and Andre Hughes to the mound. They used the luxury this year and put Hughes into the bullpen, which is supposed to give them more depth going into the playoffs. Heidenheim’s Luke Sommer and Tyler Lockwood haven’t lost a game all year. They get complemented by Johannes Krumm and Robert Gruber in the bullpen, who lack the star power of Hughes, but are not far behind in performance.
Solingen has home field advantage and therefore the series start at their home ballpark at the Weyersberg. Games three and four will be played in Heidenheim.
