With rosters expanding in September the move was kind of expected, but now the dream could become reality. The Seattle Mariners have promoted Italian third baseman Alex Liddi into the MLB on Monday following the end of the minor league season. He could play in the big leagues as soon as tonight, when the Mariners face the Los Angeles Angels.
The 23-year-old Liddi from San Remo, Italy attended the first MLB European Academy in Tirrenia back in 2005. The last few years he established himself as one of the top prospects in baseball and moved up the ladder in the Mariners farm system. During the 2011 season he played for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainier in the Pacific Coast League. He batted .259 (OBP .332/SLG .488) with 30 homeruns, 121 runs and 104 RBI in 138 games.
John Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com featured him in a story on Monday evening, covering the promotion by the Mariners, including some quotes by Liddi and FIBS’ Riccardo Schiroli.
