CB SANT BOI made the most out of their doubleheader against the winless ASTROS, scoring twice eleven runs and holding the opposition to a combined two hits in the 15 innings play. With their wins 12 and 13, the team moved up in the standings and are now tied with 2007 champion MARLINS in first place of the standings after the first half of the season.
Fernando Quijada (W 1-0) led SANT BOI to an 11-0 shutout in game one. He allowed just one hit and a walk in six innings of work, while striking out 14 batters. The defense behind him made just four plays, one flyout and two groundouts. Albert Vargas completed the one-hitter with a perfect seventh. The offense provided two big innings. They scored four runs in the second and added seven in the sixth. M. Jaramillo, O.J. Diaz and J. Abdela each drove in two runs. Besides J.L. Riera every batter of CB had a least a hit and scored once or twice. Norman Nelson Cowes (L 0-6) was charged with nine hits, ten runs (7 ER) and four walks in 5 2/3 innings.
The second match was as lopsided as the first one. However the ASTROS profited from an error by the third baseman to get a 1-0 lead in the second. SANT BOI didn’t lose any sweat, as they scored four runs in the fourth to get on the winning track. They scored five more in the eighth to end the contest due to ten-run rule. Yoel Hernandez (W 3-0), who was sidelined the past month due to an injury, made his comeback with five no-hit innings, in which he gave up just an unearned run and two walks. He struck out seven. Reliever Yaeko Vazquez allowed a hit in the seventh to end the no-hit bid. He received the save nonetheless after five strikeouts in three innings. Offensive wise M.A. Gonzalez was two-for-three with a double and three RBIs. R. Rivas scored three times. M. Jaramillo, J. Cruz and P. Peraza each drove in two. Jorge Gomez (L 0-5) was responsible for five hits, five runs (4 ER) and three walks in six innings.
The other scheduled makeup game between SAN INAZIO BILBAO and BASEBALL NAVARRA was postponed due to rain. The five other clubs had the week off. They will start the second half of the season next weekend.
