San Marino wins Italian Championship in Game 7

T&A SAN MARINO won the decisive game seven of the Italian Series on Saturday and clinched the first championship in team history. They defeated NETTUNO 7-5. On Friday DANESI had tied the series through a 4-3 victory.

NETTUNO forced a decisive seventh game on Friday, when they defeated SAN MARINO 4-3. They scored all four runs in the first four frames on RBIs by Giuseppe Mazzanti (2-4, 2 RBI), Luis Ugueto and Igor Schiavetti. Carlos Duran scored twice. SAN MARINO tried to rally, but managed only solo homeruns by Martin Vazquez (2) and Dean Rovinelli to put runs on the board.

Carlos Richetti (NET) struck out seven in seven innings to pick up the win. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk. Marco Costantini (NET) received the save. The latter also escaped two close situations in the eighth and ninth frame. After Vazquez’ second homer in the eighth, he loaded the bases with one out, but got a lineout and a strikeout to end the threat. In the ninth two more runners were stranded with two outs.

Matteo Tonellato (SMA) gave up six hits, four runs and six base on balls in seven innings to take the loss.

After blowing a 3-1 lead in the Italian Series, SAN MARINO used their third match ball to clinch the Italian Championship for the first time. Francesco Imperali and Max De Biase hit homeruns in a 7-5 victory on Saturday versus DANESI.

NETTUNO started strong into the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI double by Giuseppe Mazzanti. SAN MARINO needed two frames for an answer, as they turned the score over with a four-run third, highlighted by a three-run homer by Imperali. De Biase had tied the contest with a RBI double. They added three more runs in the seventh and eighth to build up the advantage to 7-2. De Biase hit a two-run homerun.

But DANESI tried to come back for a last time and rallied in the bottom of the ninth. They scored three runs on RBI groundouts by Ramon Tavarez and Vincent Parisi in addition to a RBI single by Andrea Castri’. But Carlos Duran struck out with runners on first and second to end the game and the Italian Baseball League season 2008.

Horacio Estrada (SMA) allowed three hits, two runs and three bb in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five for the win. Nelson Cruz (NET) took the loss after four innings, seven hits, four runs and three walks.
