The Samsung Lions have won the championship in the Korea Baseball Organisation (KBO) – Korea’s professional baseball league. It is their third consecutive title and their sixth overall in their 31-year old team history. The Daegu based club defeated the Doosan Bears 4-3 in the best-of-seven Korean Series. They won the decisive seventh game 7-3. Overall they came back from a 1-3 deficit en route to the title. The last two games were played at the Samsung Lions home stadium.
They became the first team in KBO history to erase a 1-3 deficit in the Korean Series and also the first team to win three championships in a row. Dutch right-hander Rick van den Hurk (picture) made three appearances for the Samsung Lions in the Korean Series. He started games two and six, and made a relief appearance in game five to pick up the win. However his last start got cut short due to arm problems.
The Samsung Lions had reached the Korean Series directly as the regular season winner. The fourth-ranked Doosan Bears had to survive a pair of playoff rounds against the Nexen Heroes and the LG Twins. By winning the KBO championship, the Samsung Lions now are qualified for the Asia Series “International Tournament of Champions”, which will be played from November 15-20, 2013 in Taichung.
