The German Baseball-Bundesliga commenced its 2017 campaign this past weekend. The Mannheim Tornados and Heidenheim Heidekoepfe picked up sweeps in important matchups on the first game day. Mannheim, which signed nine new players during the offseason, crushed the Buchbinder Legionaere 15-5 and 11-1 in eight innings apiece. Fernando Escarra and Thomas De Wolf hit home runs. Francisco Gonzalez and Cory Jordan received the wins.
Meanwhile the Heidekoepfe won a home-and-away series against the Munich-Haar Disciples 4-0 and 3-2. Shawn Larry had a solo home run in game one and a crucial two-run double in the ninth inning of game two. Also in the south the Mainz Athletics and the Stuttgart Reds, as well as the Bad Homburg Hornets and Saarlouis Hornets settled for splits. Bad Homburg celebrated a 17-16 comeback win after trailing 0-12 after the first inning.
In the north the Dohren Wild Farmers beat the Solingen Alligators on Saturday on the road in game two by a score of 6-5 in eleven innings. Edvardas Matusevicius had the game-winning RBI triple. In game one Andre Hughes pitched Solingen to a 8-1 win. On Sunday the Dortmund Wanderers and the Cologne Cardinals split as well. In game two the Cardinals overcame a 1-6 deficit in a 13-10 win.
