The German Baseball-Bundesliga played their second game day of the 2017 season this past weekend. In the south the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe, Munich-Haar Disciples and Stuttgart Reds celebrated two-game sweeps. The matchup between the Mainz Athletics and Mannheim Tornados ended with a split. Mannheim erased an 0-10 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning of their game against Mainz on Friday and won it 11-10 through a walk-off hit from Dominik Hoepfner in the 11th inning. On Saturday Mainz prevailed in a pitcher’s duel.
In the north the Bonn Capitals entered the competition with a pair of shutouts against the Hamburg Stealers, which also started into the new season. In game one on Saturday a nine-run inning helped Bonn to their win. Former minor leaguer Markus Solbach, who will play in an independent league this summer, pitched five scoreless innings in the win. Meanwhile the promoted Dohren Wild Farmers used Edvardas Matusevicius’ heroics to beat the Dortmund Wanderers in both ends of the twin bill. In game one he pitched strongly, in game two he dominated on offense.
