Regular Season Winner Bologna drops to fourth after six semi-final games

In the semi-final round of the Italian Baseball League FORTITUDO lost two of three to GROSSETO this week and dropped to fourth in the standings after six games. NETTUNO stays at the top with another series win.

GROSSETO took the series from BOLOGNA with a 3-1 victory on Saturday evening. Raul Marval drove in all three runs. In the first he delivered a fast 2-0 lead with a two-run homerun. After Richard Austin cut the deficit to a half with a solo shot in the fifth, Marval added an insurance run in the eighth with a RBI single.

Chris Cooper allowed just one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six. 66 of his 96 pitches were strikes. He was opposed by Cody Cillo, who struck out 13 in 7 2/3 innings, throwing 120 pitches, 75 for strikes. He gave up six hits, three runs and two walks in the loss.

SAN MARINO avoided a sweep against NETTUNO with a late rally in a 5-3 win. DANESI had taken a 2-1 lead in the seventh on Leonardo Mazzanti’s RBI fielder’s choice. But SAN MARINO got back into the game, scoring twice on David Sheldon’s two-run double in the eighth to get up 3-2. NETTUNO evened the score for a last time in the bottom of the period through Luis Ugueto’s RBI single. But T&A had one last answer left on a day, where they out hit DANESI 16-7. Seth La Fera and Martin Vazquez drove in the winning runs in the top of the ninth with RBI singles.

Tiago Da Silva (SMA) allowed four hits, two runs and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. Giovanni Carrara (NET) gave up seven hits, a run and a free pass in five innings. Peter Nyari picked up the win, Mauro Salciccia took the loss.
