Red Sox sign 17-year-old Swen Huijer
The 17-year-old Dutch pitcher Swen Huijer signed a seven-year-contract with the BOSTON RED SOX organization last week. He played for the second team of the KONICA MINOLTA PIONIERS so far and impressed scouts at the European Academies Tournament in Tirrenia, Italy last month. There he went three innings against Italy, allowing just one hit and a walk, while striking out three.
The NEW YORK METS and the NEW YORK YANKEES also were interested in the past. Huijer even received an invitation by the latter for the Dominican Instructional League last fall. He is the last one of several signings of Dutch players by Major league organizations during the past year. Rien Vernooij (METS), Dwayne Kemp (CUBS), Tjerk Hogervorst (METS), Jan Baldee (ASTROS) and Jeroen de Haas (MARINERS) all went overseas.
