Recaps: Wild Farmers, Athletics with surprise Splits in Baseball-Bundesliga



Northern Division:

Paderborn Untouchables – Bonn Capitals 15-5 (7), 6-1

The Untouchables secured second place in the northern division with a sweep over third-ranked Bonn. In game one Paderborn scored seven runs in the first two frames against German national team pitcher Tim Henkenjohann and seven in the third alone en route to a 15-5 win in seven innings. Henkenjohann left after two innings, four hits, seven runs (1 ER) and four bb. His replacement Rene Wolf lasted just two outs. Jendrick Speer and Nik Kosach combined to score seven of the 15 runs for the U’s. Michael Franke drove in three. Jon Marshall and Christian Nsien went 3-for-4 for the Capitals. Eugen Heilmann gave up five runs on 13 hits in seven innings for the win.

In the second game Daniel Meier issued just one unearned run on four hits and seven bb in 7 1/3 innings to lead the Untouchables to a 6-1 win. He had received an early 2-0 lead after two frames. The score remained close until the eighth, when Paderborn put four runs on the board to seal the win. Bryce Schoening surrendered eight hits, six runs (4 ER) and a walk in seven-plus innings.

HSV Stealers – Pulheim Gophers 9-8, 4-6

In a thrilling doubleheader between the Stealers and the Gophers for fourth place in the northern division of the Baseball-Bundesliga, both teams had to settle for the split. In game one the HSV won a back-and-forth battle 9-8 thanks to three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Patrick Maat had the game-winner with a walk-off two-run double. Pulheim just had erased a 3-6 deficit by scoring five runs in the last two frames, including three in the top of the ninth on a pair of singles by Merlin Mendel and Daniel Lamb-Hunt. Lamb-Hunt had hit a two-run homerun one inning earlier.

In the second match the Gophers used a three-run rally in the top of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 6-4 victory. The Stealers tried to come back, but insurance runs by Pulheim in the seventh and ninth sealed the win. Kris Garcia scored twice and drove in two.

Solingen Alligators – Dohren Wild Farmers 14-4 (7), 2-6

In game one the Solingen offense pounded the opposing pitching with ten runs in the first three innings on their way to a 14-4 win in seven frames. Dominik Wulf added a two-run homerun to the rout. Andre Hughes struck out nine in five innings for his ninth win of the season.

In the second game Dohren scored four runs in the top of the ninth to break up a 2-2 tie, prevailing 6-2 in the end. Vince DeCoito held Solingen to single runs the fourth and eighth, helped by a passed ball and a throwing error. After Tyson Jaquez started the decisive rally with a RBI single DeCoito came through with a two-run single. Nils Hartkopf took the loss in relief.

Dortmund Wanderers – Cologne Cardinals 2-13, 10-0

The Wanderers missed out on the opportunity to make a big step towards the playoffs, as they had to settle for the split against the Cologne Cardinals. The eighth-ranked Cards won game one by a score of 13-2, before being shut out 0-10 in game two.

Southern Division:

Mainz Athletics – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 5-9, 7-6 (12)

The Heidekoepfe had to settle for the split in Mainz on Saturday. In game one Matt Pali hit two homeruns to lead Heidenheim to a 9-5 win. The reigning champion had taken a fast 4-0 lead after two innings and answered comeback tries by the Athletics with insurance runs. Markus Winkler received his tenth win of the season, while Manuel Moeller took the loss.

In the second game Mainz came back twice en route to a 7-6 win in twelve innings. Martin Kipphan scored the game winner in the third extra inning on a base hit by Hendrick Schewe. After Dusty Bergman (HEI) and Pat Haugen (MAI) had exchanged zeros through the first five innings, the Heidekoepfe took a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth. But the A’s answered with four runs in the seventh. Heidenheim regained the lead in the top of the ninth, but Mainz countered again and sent the game to extra innings.

Mannheim Tornados – Haar Disciples 8-4, 14-6

The Tornados solidified third place in the standings with a sweep over the Disciples on Sunday. In game one a five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by a bases clearing triple of Sascha Lutz (4-4, 2 runs, 5 RBI) decided the outcome in an 8-4 win for Mannheim. Michael Stephan had tied the game for Haar with a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth. Ty Eriksen hit a two-run double in the seventh.

In game two the score stayed close until Mannheim put seven runs on the board combined in the seventh and eighth in a 14-6 win. Marvin Appiah hit two homeruns and collected a total of four RBI for the Tornados. Dennis Kelly went 5-for-6 with a homerun, three runs scored and four RBI. Dominik Hoepfner drove in three. Haar’s Zach Kim had a two-run double and a two-run single.

Gauting Indians – Saarlouis Hornets 8-5, 4-12

The Indians remain in the playoff hunt, but missed out the opportunity to make up even more ground towards the Disciples with a split against the Hornets. In game one Gauting scored all eight runs of an 8-5 victory in the bottom of the seventh. Saarlouis tried to come back afterwards, but four runs in the last two frames were not enough. Dominik Hartinger struck out twelve in eight innings for the win.

The Hornets scored three runs in the first two innings and three each in the sixth and seventh in game two en route to a 12-4 win. Jakub Vojak (5-10, 6 RBI in the doubleheader) hit two homeruns for the guests, while Raef Hobbs-Brown sent one ball over the fence. Tom Fiebig beat Kyle Kearcher on the mound.
