Recaps South: Buchbinder Legionaere improve to 14 0 in 2010

Mannheim Tornados – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 2-1, 4-15 (8)

The Tornados and the Heidekoepfe settled for a split in their rematch of last year’s German finals. In game one Mannheim scored two runs in the opening period on a RBI double by Sascha Lutz and a RBI sac bunt by Craig Pycock, which was all they needed to win 2-1. Heidenheim only was able to score on a sac fly by David Fuesser in the top of the ninth. One batter later they nearly tied the contest with two outs on a single by Chris Beck, but Hagen Raetz was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Dominik Hoepfner. In the second part of the twin bill the offense of Heidenheim woke up and put 15 runs on the board in an eight-inning 15-4 rout. Chris Beck went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI. Each player in the starting lineup scored at least once, four of them, besides Beck, twice.

Haar Disciples – Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg 0-8, 0-14 (7)

The Buchbinder Legionaere defended their clean slate in the Baseball-Bundesliga south with a pair of shutouts on the road in Haar. In game one Boris Bokaj (REG) and Ted Gieschen (HAA) were locked into a pitcher’s duel for the first six innings, until Regensburg broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh. They added two more runs in the eighth and five in the ninth, highlighted by a three-run pinch hit homerun by Klaus Hopfensperger.

In game two Rodney Gessmann and Ludwig Glaser hit three-run homeruns in the first and fourth to lead Regensburg to a 14-0 win in seven innings against the Disciples. New foreign pitcher Jerome Burton Jr. and Rene Herlitzius combined to allow just three hits in the shutout. Calvin Brutus on the opposing side lasted just three-plus innings this time.

Gauting Indians – Neuenburg Atomics 3-2 (10), 11-4

For the first time in seven years Baseball-Bundesliga the Gauting Indians have extended a winning streak to five games after sweeping their doubleheader against the Neuenburg Atomics on Sunday. In game one Matti Emery drove in Tom Rohrer with a long walk-off RBI double in the tenth to lead Gauting to a 3-2 win. The Indians had trailed 0-2 entering the ninth inning. John Dobkowski picked up the win in relief of Dominik Hartinger. Janos Daroczi went the distance, taking the loss. Gauting not only had to overcome a two-run deficit in the process, but also a serious injury by player/coach Andy Kropf, who dislocated his shoulder on a diving play in the opening frame. He was taken to a hospital and is considered as week-to-week.

In the second match Gauting scored nine of their eleven runs between the third and the sixth en route to an easy 11-4 win. Kyle Kearcher struck out seven in seven innings for the win. Kory Twede scored five runs overall on the day and hit a homerun in game two. Andre Salcher went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, Matti Emery 4-for-9 with four RBI. The Atomics were led by Rob Piscatelli (5-10) and Pat Carlson (4-7). They also saw the debut of Tony Ronco on the mound in game two, who took the loss.

Mainz Athletics – Saarlouis Hornets 2-3, 6-10

The Hornets returned to the winning lane after stunning the Athletics with a sweep in Mainz. In game one it was Jakub Vojak who hit a go-ahead two-run homerun in the top of the sixth to lead Saarlouis to a 3-2 win. The A’s led since Jan-Niclas Stoeklin scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Ales Keprta struck out six in nine innings, allowing eight hits, two unearned runs and a walk. Manuel Moeller struck out eleven in eight innings, but also gave up the homerun to Vojak, taking the loss.

In the second match the Hornets took an early 5-0 lead in the second inning with the rally highlighted by a two-run single by Martin Matlacki. Mainz was able to cut the deficit to 4-6 going into the ninth inning, but a grand slam by former A’s player Raeff Hobbs-Brown sealed a 10-4 win for Saarlouis. Mike Larson doubled three times for Mainz. The A’s now have lost the last eight games in a row and dropped to seventh in the standings.
