NETTUNO is off to a good start into the 2009 season of the Italian Baseball League. On Saturday afternoon they defeated GODO 9-2 behind a five-for-five debut by former big leaguer Abraham Nunez. He scored three times and drove in one. Dewis Navarro and Andrea Castri combined for four RBI. Giovanni Carrara (NET) started and allowed just two hits and three walks in four scoreless innings, striking out six. Remigio Leal (W 1-0) picked up the win after three innings of relief. Brandon Camardese (L 0-1) gave up six hits, two runs and a bb in four innings. DANESI’s offense made most of its damage against the bullpen with James Ricchio and Michele Savini.

Game two of the doubleheader was much different, but with the same outcome. DE ANGELIS took a fast 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a RBI double by Felix Escalona and a RBI single by Roberto Toniazzi. Another RBI double by Escalona in the seventh extended the gap to three runs. But NETTUNO came back. They tied the game with a RBI single by Juan Camilo and a two-run double by Abraham Nunez in the eighth. Manuel Gasparri provided the game-winning in the same frame with a RBI single to seal the 4-3 victory. Jeff Farnsworth (NET) struck out ten in six solid innings, conceding five hits, two runs (1 ER) and three walks. Yoel Hernandez (W 1-0) earned the win in relief. Emmanuel Ulloa (GOD) gave up just three hits and a bb in six innings. But Danny Forte and Roberto Cabalisti (L 0-1) blew the lead.

In the return of Mauro Mazzotti and Lorenzo Avagnina to Grosseto, RIMINI scored five runs between the fourth and fifth frame en route to a 6-3 win. Mario Chiarini excelled going four-for-five with two homeruns, a double, three runs scored and five RBI. Raul Marval (3-4, 2 RBI) and Jairo Ramos homered for the ORIOLES. Buddy Bengel (W 1-0) received the win after six hits, three runs and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. Chris Cooper (L 0-1) was charged with six hits, five runs and three bb in five innings.

In game two in the evening Rafael Garcia (W 1-0) led the PIRATES to a 6-0 shutout. He allowed just two hits in eight innings, striking out eight. A single in the fifth by Gabriele Ermini broke up the perfect game bid. But as like later after a Jorge Nunez single, a double play erased the runner from the bases, so Garcia faced the minimum of 24 batters. Gustavo Martinez completed the two-hitter with a perfect ninth. Lorenzo Avagnina and Eddie Rios homered for RIMINI and combined for five RBI. Juan Figueroa (L 0-1) also struck out eight, but gave up five hits, three runs (1 ER) and a bb in 5 1/3 innings.

T&A San Marino – Palfinger Reggio Emilia 5-4

SAN MARINO scored one run each in five of the first six and held of all comeback tries by REGGIO EMILIA to win 5-4. Catcher Randolph Kirindongo hit a solo homerun. Dean Rovinelli drove in two. Martin Vazquez went three-for-five with two runs scored and a RBI. Mattia Reginato cut the deficit to a run in the seventh with a solo shot. REGGIO’s leadoff man Rafael Santaniello walked four times and scored twice. Tiago Da Silva (W 1-0) gave up two hits, a run and two bb in five innings. Greg Palanzo (L 0-1) was responsible for seven hits, four runs and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Massimiliano De Biase capped a thrilling comeback with a walk off solo homerun in the bottom of the ninth to lead SAN MARINO to a 10-9 victory in the night game of the Saturday doubleheader. The IBL champion came back from a 0-8 deficit. T&A tied the contest in the eighth through a sac fly by Simone Albanese and a RBI single by Riccardo Suardi, setting up De Biase’s heroics in the ninth. The DH finished with three hits and four RBI. It could have been the dream debut by Willie Jake Blalock, brother of MLB star Hank Blalock. The outfielder went three-for-four with grand slam and a total of seven RBI. Claudio Biagini also homered for PALFINGER. Rafael Santaniello scored three times. SAN MARINO’s starter Matteo Tonellato lasted just one out on the mound, as he was replaced after two hits, five runs and two walks in the first. Daustin Nielsen (EMI) gave up nine hits, five runs and four bb in 5 2/3 innings. Pedro Orta (W 1-0) got the win; Santo Porco (L 0-1) took the loss.

Cariparma – Fortitudo Bologna 6-4

Three runs each in the sixth and seventh frame decided the outcome in favor of CARIPARMA in a 6-4 win over FORTITUDO. Johnny Balentina led the offense with four RBI. Orlando Munoz and Davide Dallospedale each scored twice. Leonardo Zileri and Johnny Carvajal had three hits apiece. PARMA’s starter Marco Grifantini allowed one hit, two runs and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. Danny Newman (W 1-0) picked up the win. Yulman Ribeiro (BOL) surrendered seven hits, three runs and two bb in five innings in his IBL debut. Giuseppe Norrito (L 0-1), FORTITUDO’s last minute replacement for Cody Cillo, took the loss.

Cariparma – Fortitudo Bologna 8-3

PARMA won the opening week series against BOLOGNA with an 8-3 win on Saturday evening. Davide Dallospedale hit a three-run homerun. Stefano De Simoni drove in three as well. Joseph Mazzuca homered for FORTITUDO. Roberto Corradini (W 1-0) gave up five hits, two runs and two walks in seven solid innings for the win. Fabio Betto (L 0-1) gave up five hits, three runs and two bb in five innings.

    Sounds like an exciting game. Too bad we cannot see the IBL games in the internet. How about MLB.tv for Europe?
