Corendon Kinheim opened the 2011 season in the Dutch Hoofdklasse with a 7-1 victory over ADO on Thursday evening. David Bergman (W) struck out 13 batters in six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and two walks. Bryan Engelhardt homered and scored twice. Jason Halman drove in two. Jurandy Girigori (L) surrendered two hits, three runs (2 ER) and a whopping seven bb in five frames. It was the lone win for a home team in the Hoofdklasse on Thursday.
Mr. Cocker HCAW – L&D Amsterdam Pirates 1-10

L&D Amsterdam, which had won the opening series in the Hoofdklasse against DOOR Neptunus last weekend, continued its strong start into the 2011 season. The Pirates downed Mr. Cocker HCAW 10-1 on Thursday. Taking a quick lead in the second on a sac fly by Vince Rooi, three runs in the fourth and four in the seventh blew things wide open. Percy Isenia went 2-for-3 with a homerun, three runs and three RBI. Bas de Jong collected four hits. Rob Cordemans (W) struck out eleven in seven scoreless two-hit innings. Kevin Miner (L) gave up twelve hits, eight runs and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.
Sparta/Feyenoord Rotterdam – DOOR Neptunus 0-1

Defending champion DOOR Neptunus got back to .500 on Thursday, shutting out Sparta/Feyenoord Rotterdam 1-0. Eugene Kingsale broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. He doubled to lead off the frame, moved to third on a sac bunt by Benjamin Dille and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Diegomar Markwell (W) won the pitcher’s duel over Bobby Carrington (L). The Dutch national team hurler issued just four hits and two walks in eight scoreless innings. Arshwin Asjes (S) pitched the ninth for the save. Carrington, who had started the new baseball year in Europe with the Astros Valencia in the Spanish Division de Honor, struck out ten in eight innings. He took the tough loss, giving up just one run on four hits and three bb.
UVV – Vaessen Pioniers 4-10

It wasn’t what UVV had hoped for in their return to the Hoofdklasse. The promoted club from Utrecht lost 4-10 to the Vaessen Pioniers on Thursday. Four runs in the fifth inning put the guests from Hoofddorp up by five runs and decided the outcome early. Mark Duursma drove in two. Nik Gumeson and Dè Flanegin scored twice. Jirka Bliek had three hits for UVV. Conrad Orman (W) allowed four hits, three runs and three bb in 5 2/3 innings. Orlando Yntema (L) surrendered nine hits, six runs (2 ER) and a walk in six innings. Both teams combined to commit eight errors in the game, six by the UVV defense.
