Recaps North: Solingen, Paderborn settle for Split in Showdown

Solingen Alligators – Paderborn Untouchables 6-5 (10), 0-2

The highly anticipated showdown between the dominating teams in the northern division of the Baseball-Bundesliga in recent years ended with a split. In game one Solingen took an early 4-1 lead in the second, but blew it to trail 4-5 after six. A solo homerun by Florian Goetze tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh. The game went into extra innings, where Evan Porter doubled and scored the winning run for the Alligators on a walk off single by Dominik Wulf.

In the second game the two American pitchers on the mound Daniel Meier (PAD) and Josh Rickards (SOL) took over and put zero after zero on the board. The Untouchables scored two runs in the sixth to seal a 2-0 shutout. Meier struck out ten, but also walked eight in a complete game. Rickards, after an early collision banged up, was replaced by Nils Hartkopf for the last three frames.

HSV Stealers – Bonn Capitals 1-3, 9-4

The Stealers already had ended the winning streak of the Untouchables two weeks ago. On Saturday the Bonn Capitals were next in line. Traveling to Hamburg with an 8-0 record, the Caps won game one 3-1 behind another solid start by Tim Henkenjohann, who allowed just one run on three hits and two walks in nine innings, while striking out twelve. His battery mate Jon Marshall scored two of the three runs.

In the second game of the day the HSV overcame an early 1-3 deficit to score a combined seven runs in the fourth and fifth en route to a 9-4 win, which also marked the first loss for Bonn this year. Hamburg’s new foreign pitcher Corey Parsons won his debut by going five innings, allowing three runs (1 ER) on three hits and five walks. Philipp von Soosten provided the highlight at the plate with a two-run homerun.

Dortmund Wanderers – Pulheim Gophers 3-8, 0-5

After two seasons in the playoffs the Wanderers have to say goodbye to these hopes this year. On Saturday they were swept by the Pulheim Gophers at home, which hadn’t won a game this year until game one. In the first part of the twin bill Daniel Lamb-Hunt went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead Pulheim to an 8-3 win. Philipp Spade, Kristian Garcia and Wolfgang Walther combined for six RBI. In game two Bryan Roberts issued just five hits and two walks in nine scoreless innings to out-duel Matt Kemp and to lead the Gophers to a 5-0 shutout and the sweep. He struck out 14, while Kemp had to settle for eleven Ks in eight innings. Lamb-Hunt hit a solo homerun and drove in two overall.

Dohren Wild Farmers – Cologne Cardinals 12-8

The Wild Farmers continue to impress as the new team in the league, already picking up win number four this season with a 12-8 against the Cardinals last Saturday. Dohren scored six runs in the seventh and the eighth to decide the outcome against Cologne. Vince DeCoito went 3-for-4 with a homerun, four runs scored and four RBI. Mark Buschmann homered and drove in four for the Cards. Joe Slater scored three times. Game two of the doubleheader got postponed after one inning due to rain.
