Northern Division:
Dortmund Wanderers – Bonn Capitals 4-7, 2-0
The Wanderers and the Capitals settled for a split in the Baseball-Bundesliga on Saturday. In game one it was once again Tim Henkenjohann who was unbeatable, leading Bonn to a 7-4 win. The Caps took the lead in the third, doubled it in the sixth, before scoring twice in the seventh and three times in the ninth. Dortmund tried to come back in the bottom of the last frame, but only managed to cut the deficit to three runs.
In the second part of the doubleheader Matt Kemp allowed just four hits in a complete game shutout to lead the Wanderers to a 2-0 win. Bonn’s starter Bryce Schoening matched him for the first six frames until RBIs by Roy Wesche and Dennis Stechmann in the seventh and eighth put two runs on the board.
Dohren Wild Farmers – Paderborn Untouchables 2-10, 0-7
The Untouchables improved to 17-5 for the season with a sweep in Dohren. In game one they scored six runs between the fourth and the sixth en route to a 10-2 win. Daniel Meier, who scored three times in the game, hit a two-run homerun to cap the rally in the sixth. Michael Franke went 4-for-5 with homerun, two runs scored and two RBI. Eugen Heilmann went the distance for the win. Jan Hassenpflug homered for the Wild Farmers.
In the second game Meier dominated on the mound, issuing just three hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings to lead Paderborn to a 7-0 shutout. Franke hit another two-run homerun and drove in three overall. Nik Kosach went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Vince DeCoito struck out 14 in nine innings, but still was charged with the loss.
Cologne Cardinals – Pulheim Gophers 11-8, 6-15
The Cardinals and the Gophers picked up a win in each in the doubleheader on Sunday. In game one Cologne came out firing, scoring five runs in the opening frame en route to an 11-3 lead after six innings. Pulheim tried to come back in the end, but after a combined five runs in the eighth and ninth, the Cards stopped the rally and sealed an 11-8 victory. Pascal Raab received the win, Sebastian Theobald the loss. In the second game Pulheim overcame an early 2-4 deficit by scoring six runs in the seventh. They added six more in the ninth to blow things wide open and to secure a 15-6 rout.
Southern Division:
Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Mainz Athletics 10-0 (7), 4-7
The Buchbinder Legionaere got their 20th win of the season on Friday, but had to settle for the split after the A’s surprised on Saturday. In game one Boris Bokaj improved to 9-0, while allowing just three hits in a seven-inning 10-0 shutout. The offense provided him with an 8-0 lead after three innings, chasing Mainz’ hurler Manuel Moeller early. Klaus Hopfensperger hit a solo homerun.
One day later Pat Haugen celebrated a memorable debut for the A’s, striking out ten batters in a complete game victory, leading his new team to a surprise 7-4 win. After allowing three Regensburg runs in the second, he only gave up one more the rest of the way. Mainz had tied the game in the top of the third and took the lead for good with a four-run rally in the seventh. Philipp Hoffschild started for the Buchbinder Legionaere and took the loss.
Heidenheim Heidekoepfe – Gauting Indians 2-1, 5-4
The Heidekoepfe had to work hard to pick up two victories over the Indians on Sunday, solidifying second place six days before their showdown with Regensburg. In game one Markus Winkler (W 7-2) and Dominik Hartinger (L 2-3) exchanged zeros on the board for the first six frames. Gauting struck first in the seventh, taking a 1-0 lead on a sac fly by Bernhard Huber. But Heidenheim answered right away. Peter Dankerl doubled to lead of the bottom of the frame and crossed the plate through a single by Johannes Schaeffler. Pinch runner David Fuesser scored the game winner moments later on an error by the second baseman.
In game two the Heidekoepfe had the better start, putting four runs on the board in the opening period, one on a sac fly by Simon Guehring, two thanks to a homerun by Robert Gruber and the fourth on a RBI single by David Fuesser. But Indians starter Kyle Kearcher settled in afterwards and his team came back. After cutting the deficit to three runs on back-to-back doubles by Lasse Bischoff and Kyle Allen, they evened the score in the fifth. A RBI single by Bischoff reduced the gap to two runs before Kory Twede tied the contest with a two-run double. But it wasn’t enough. Both teams didn’t score until Heidenheim loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. After a flyout to second Martin Dewald worked a walk to force in the winning run for the reigning champion. Martin Almstetter picked up the win in relief, his 100th in the German Baseball-Bundesliga.
Mannheim Tornados – Saarlouis Hornets 8-3, 0-10 (7)
In their pursuit of a spot in the top four of the southern standings the Tornados had to settle for a split at home against the Hornets. In game one Mannheim scored five runs in the second to erase a 0-2 deficit and en route to an 8-3 win. Marvin Appiah, Matt Lokken and Dominik Hoepfner had two RBI each. Rene Franke received the win, Peter Ackermann the loss. Eddie Martinez hit a solo homerun for Saarlouis.
In the second game Tom Fiebig led the Hornets to a 10-0 shutout in seven innings. He issued just five hits and a walk going the distance. He struck out just three, but also induced ten groundouts in probably his best start this season. The offense wasn’t far behind, scoring in five of the seven innings highlighted by two-run homerun of Jakub Vojak. Raeff Hobbs-Brown crossed the plate three times. Corey Stevens took the loss.
Haar Disciples – Neuenburg Atomics 15-0 (7), 20-3
The Disciples solidified third place in the standings with a pair of lopsided wins over Neuenburg. In game one Haar scored four runs in the first and eight in the second period en route to a 15-0 shutout over the Atomics. Gregor Klinc pitched five scoreless innings for the win. Highlighted by a two-run triple by Tony Younis Haar again scored early and often in game two, taking a 10-0 lead after two frames on their way to a 20-3 rout and the sweep. Calvin Brutus got the win, Tony Ronco the loss.
