Recaps: Buchbinder Legionaere end Winning Streak of Gauting Indians

Northern Division:

Paderborn Untouchables – HSV Stealers 3-1, 8-0

In front of 300 people in attendance at the Ahorn Sportpark in Paderborn, the Untouchables swept their doubleheader against the HSV Stealers on Sunday in the northern division of the Baseball-Bundesliga. In game one Eugen Heilmann went the distance to lead the U’s to a 3-1 win with the only blemish being a solo homerun by Patrick Maat in the sixth. Eric Harms took the loss for the Hamburg. In game two Daniel Meier didn’t issue a walk in seven scoreless innings to lead Paderborn to an 8-0 shutout. The Stealers with Corey Parsons on the mound already trailed 0-4 after five and 0-7 after six innings.

Bonn Capitals – Cologne Cardinals 12-1 (8), 1-2 (11)

The Capitals had to settle for split at home against the Cardinals. In game one Tim Henkenjohann cruised to an easy win, allowing just one run in eight innings in a 12-1 rout. Jesse LaCasse finished off the mercy-rule victory with a grand slam in the eighth. Game two turned out to be a nail biter with Cologne prevailing 2-1 after eleven innings.

Pulheim Gophers – Dohren Wild Farmers 7-1, 2-9

The Pulheim Gophers and the Dohren Wild Farmers also split their doubleheader. In game one Pulheim won 7-1 behind the strong pitching of Markus Solbach and a homerun by Daniel Lamb-Hunt. In game two the Wild Farmers had the better ending, picking up a 9-2 victory. Vince DeCoito beat Lee Roberts on the mound, who had to battle through shoulder problems. Tyson Jaquez set the highlight at the plate with a two-run shot.

Southern Division:

Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Gauting Indians 5-2, 13-3 (8)

The Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg ended the eight-game winning streak of the Gauting Indians with a pair of wins. On Friday Regensburg took an early 3-0 lead after a two-run homerun by Klaus Hopfensperger in the third. Boris Bokaj pitched eight scoreless innings for his eighth win of the year. The Indians tried to come back in the ninth, but only managed a two-run homerun by Matti Emery. In the second game on Saturday afternoon Gauting had the better start, taking a 3-0 lead midway through the second. But it wasn’t meant to be. The Buchbinder Legionaere countered with single runs in the second and the third before going up in front with a six-run fourth. The rally was highlighted by a three-run go-ahead triple of Matt Vance.

Mainz Athletics – Mannheim Tornados 2-11, 6-7

The Tornados took advantage of the two losses by Gauting and moved back into the top four of the southern division standings with a sweep in Mainz. In game one they chased Athletics starter Manuel Moeller from the mound after nine runs in the first two frames en route to an easy 11-2 win. In the second match Mannheim blew a 4-0 lead, but prevailed 7-6 in the end. Mainz had tied the contest in the sixth.

Saarlouis Hornets – Haar Disciples 6-9 (10), 7-5

The Disciples hit a little speed bump in their pursuit of a spot in the playoffs, having to settle for a split on the road against the Hornets. In game one Haar prevailed 9-6 after ten innings in a back-and-forth affair. In the second match Saarlouis erased an early 0-4 deficit to take a 7-4 lead after six innings on their way to a 7-5 win. Eddie Martinez hit a homerun for the Hornets in game one.

Neuenburg Atomics – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 5-11, 3-8 (11)

The Heidekoepfe solidified second place in the standings with a sweep in the Neuenburg. In game one Heidenheim scored in six of the first seven innings en route to an 11-5 win. Sam Whitehead (HEI) and Alex Aucoin (NAT) each collected four hits in the game. Chris Beck scored twice and drove in two for the guests. In the second match the Atomics stunned the Heidekoepfe by tying the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI triple by Aucoin and a RBI single by Bernardo Marino. But they couldn’t finish off the upset and lost 3-8 after Heidenheim scored five runs in the eleventh. Whitehead capped the rally with a two-run double. Beck scored three times.
