On Friday evening the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, British Columbia started with the opener between locals Prince George Axemen and the German National Team. The Axemen of manager Jim Swanson used a four-run fifth to beat the lone European participant 8-4. The rally was highlighted by a three-run homerun of Charlie Strandlund. Dustin Bissonnette and Brandon Hunter drove in two each.
Germany had taken an early 1-0 lead through a solo homerun by Dominik Wulf in the first. Wulf participated in the homerun derby on Thursday, reaching the finals with a total of three long balls. The third baseman of the SOLINGEN ALLIGATORS later drove in another run with a fielder’s choice in the seventh. Simon Guehring collected three hits.
Andrew Brock (W 1-0) picked up the win on the mound, allowing seven hits, two runs and two bb in six innings. He struck out four. Andre Hughes (L 0-1) of the Dutch Hoofdklasse club MR COCKER HCAW conceded six hits, five runs and three bb in five innings. Nils Hartkopf and Martin Dewald also pitched for Germany in the game.
