The German national team celebrated its first win at the World Baseball Challenge on Sunday afternoon in Prince George, British Columbia. They used a 14-run fourth inning to beat up the Bahamas 20-3 in ten-run rule shortened seven innings. After losing the opener 4-8 to the Axemen, the team of head coach Greg Frady now is 1-1 in the tournament.
After Sherman Ferguson put the Bahamas ahead 2-0 with a two-run homerun in the top of the first, Germany answered right away, taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame. They continued to score and led 6-3 at the end of the third. The fourth began, in which the Europeans sent 19 batters to the plate, putting 14 runs on the board. The rally was highlighted by a three-run single by Ludwig Glaser and a grand slam by Chris Howard. Sascha Lutz scored four times in the game. Simon Guehring drove in three.
Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez (W 1-0) gave up five hits, three runs and two walks in five innings, picking up an easy victory. Benedikt Antwi closed it out with two scoreless frames. Darren Bowleg (L 0-1) conceded five hits, eight runs (7 ER) and eight bb in three-plus innings. He also threw four wild pitches and balked twice. Five errors by the defense led to a total of ten unearned runs.
Germany is going to face Team USA on Tuesday morning at 4am CET. The Americans opened the tournament on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Canada.
