The European Cup Winners Cup “A” Women Softball Tournament will take place from August 20-25 in Prague, Czech Republic. The tourney will feature some of the top womens fast-pitch teams from across Europe.
Teams competing in the tournament includes Legnano (Italy), KRC Altron (Czech), Terrasvogels (Dutch), Moskovia (Russia), Frameries A’s (Belgium), Antorcha (Spain), Superfund Wanderers (Austria), London Monkeys (Britain), and the Hamburg Knights (Germany).
Legnano and the Terrasvogels, are the tournament favorites and will meet in an Opening Day showdown on Monday, August 20. Top hitter Kate JUDD and teammates Monica VERGA and Yan-Qing ZHANG pace Legnano.
The Terrasvogels have dominated the Dutch Softball League in 2007 and are led by the league’s top hitter – Sandra GOUVERNEUR. Other sluggers includes Annemiele VAN RIESSEN and Nicole WESSELS. The pitching duo of Judith VAN KAMPEN and Dagmar BLOEMING anchor the pitching staff.
Antorcha lost a thrilling Spanish Softball League Finals this season to the Viladecans and boasts some talented players in Noelia FLORES, Macarena MARTINEZ, and Raquel SAUREZ.
The Knights have enjoyed a fine season in the German Bundesliga with dual threats Michele VESELINOVIC and Briana Hout pacing the squad. Other top hitters includes Manuela HINTZE, Claudia EFFENBERG, and Afsoan ALIPOUR.
KRC Altron will have the home field advantage and top hurler Lucie MARIKOVA – the 2006 European Cup Best Pitcher award-winner. The Russian softball club, Moscovia, is also a tough squad.
The London Monkeys are led by Shelley BUCK, Sophie FROUD, Tanya PRICE, and Michelle MAYNE while the Superfund Wanderers are paced by Jennifer EATON, Veronika CARDA, Jaqueline CORNELIUS, and Denise ORLOVITS.
