After losing to Japan in the official opening game at the Premier12 on Sunday at the Sapporo Dome in Japan, South Korea resumed play in the first round at Taoyuan Stadium in Taiwan on Wednesday with a convincing 10-1 win over the Dominican Republic. For the reigning World Baseball Classic champion it was the second loss in as many games.
D.R. actually took the lead in the game, when Pedro Feliz drove in Wilkin Ramirez with a single through the middle. South Korea meanwhile couldn’t do anything with Luis Perez on the mound. He allowed just one hit and hit another batter in six innings, while striking out five. He left before the seventh and momentum shifted immediately.
With one swing Dae Ho Lee turned the score around, hitting a two-run home run in the seventh. This long ball served as ignition for the Korean offense, which would add eight more runs in the eighth and ninth. Keunwoo Jeong hit a pair of doubles to drive in three runs. Hyunsoo Kim cleared the bases with a triple to highlight the five-run rally in the eighth.
Won Jun Chang picked up the win, conceding four hits, a run and a walk in seven innings. He struck out seven. Two relievers closed it out without any trouble. Felix Fermin took the loss in relief.
The Dominican Republic already is going to have its backs to the wall on Thursday, when they will face Japan at Taoyuan Stadium. South Korea is going to face Venezuela in the afternoon game at the same ballpark.
