Former Pittsburgh Pirate Ray Sadler is the latest import player to suddenly leave the Italian Baseball League. According to reports from Italy the outfielder abandons Danesi Nettuno without notice and has returned to the United States. Apparently he joined catcher Chris Crescenzi on the flight back, who is visiting New Jersey to consult with doctors due to health problems. But while he is expected to return in time for the European Cup in Rotterdam next week, Sadler seems to be gone for good.
It is already the second import player to leave Nettuno after Dirk Hayhurst parted ways before the start of the season. Danesi is not the only team in the IBL to lose players this way, as Novara United experienced this with a couple of players as well. Jean Toledo, Rodney Medina and Fernando Gutierrez didn’t join the Milan based team despite agreements. Mitch Waters left last week.
Sadler was batting a team-leading .365 (OBP .419, SLG .583) with four homeruns, 21 runs and 19 RBI in 24 games.
