After 25 years of waiting the city of Philadelphia has a reason to celebrate a title in one of the four major sports (1983 76ers were last) in the United States. The Phillies beat the Rays 4-3 in game five of the World Series and won their second championship in team history.
The match was a continuation of the Monday evening affair, when rain stopped play midway through the sixth inning and suspended play for 46 hours. The three-inning showdown started furious, as the Phillies opened the bottom half of the sixth with a double by Geoff Jenkins, who came around to score on Jayson Werth’s bloop single into center field. However Tampa Bay came back for last time, tying the contest in the top of the seventh on a solo shot by Rocco Baldelli. But Philadelphia countered right away. They started the bottom half of the period again with a double, this time by Pat Burrell. Pinch runner Eric Bruntlett advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Pedro Feliz to put the Phillies back on top. This time they hold on and closer Brad Lidge finished the job.
