Panama needed just seven innings to cruise into the quarterfinals. They had to win, but had the tiebreaker on their side versus Mexico, which has the same 4-3 record. They didn’t mess around and tallied out 16 hits on their way to an easy 13-3 victory against South Africa.
The only African team at the World Cup scared the Panamanian fans, when they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However the possible upset lasted not for long. The Central Americans scored eleven runs between the second and fifth frame to gain a 11-2 advantage. They added two more in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest due to ten-run-rule.
Sherman OBANDO and Freddy HERRERA CHENG had three RBI each. Earl AGNOLLY THOMPSON got three hits.
Warren Anton HERMAN was two for three.
Miguel GOMEZ gave up a run on five hits in five innings for the win.
Carl Marc MICHAELS allowed ten hits, six runs and a walk in three innings.
