In the Baseball tournament at the Olympics, China upset Taiwan. In Softball Chinese Taipei avoided a loss, winning 2-1. Hsueh-Mei Lu drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth with a RBI double, regaining the lead for Taiwan, after China had tied the contest in the second on Li Sun’s RBI single. Hui-Chuan Chiang drove in the first run in the first with a RBI single.
Chia-Yen Wu (TPE) allowed one run on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Ming-Hui Chueh (W 1-0) relieved her and picked up the win for 4 2/3 innings of one-hit relief. Huili Yu (L 1-2) gave up five hits and two runs (1 ER) in four innings.
Japan – Venezuela 5-2

Japan used a four-run fifth to beat Venezuela 5-2, overcoming a 0-2 deficit in the process. Satoko Mabuchi and Eri Yamada (2 RBI) hit homeruns. Maria Soto and Zuleyma Cirimele put Venezuela in front with a RBI single and RBI double in the third and fourth period of the match.
Hiroko Saito (W 3-0) picked up win number three with another complete game. She allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking none. Johana Gomez (VEN) started and gave up four hits and a run in four innings. Mariangee Bogado (L 2-2) took the loss.
Canada – Australia 0-4

Australia beat Canada 4-0 on Sunday for their fourth straight win. They are now 4-2, moving into third place in the standings with one game day remaining in the preliminary round. Canada dropped their third game in a row, falling to fourth.
After five scoreless innings to start the match, Australia came through in the sixth, when Natalie Ward drove in Stacy Porter with a RBI single. They added three more runs in the seventh to seal the win. Natalie Titcume and Kerry Wyborn had RBI singles in the rally.
The Canadian offense never got anything going, moving a runner into scoring position just once, when Megan Timpf advanced to second on a sac bunt by Alison Bradley in the second frame, but Erin Cumpstone lined out into left field.
Tanya Harding (W 2-1) allowed just three hits and a walk in five innings, striking out one. Lauren Bay Regula (L 2-1) gave up two hits, three runs and six walks in six-plus innings to take the loss. She struck out six.
USA – Netherlands 8-0

Monica Abbot (W 2-0) excelled again and pitched five perfect innings in an 8-0 shutout against the winless Netherlands. Team USA scored runs in all of the first four innings to support their superior starter. Abbot struck out nine to pick up win number two. USA pitching now has allowed four hits in six games at the Olympics.
Jessica Mendoza, Crystl Bustos (3-3, 2 runs) and Tairia Flowers each hit homeruns.
Rebecca Soumeru (L 0-1) got her first start in Beijing, allowing eight hits and six runs (5 ER) in two-plus innings. Judith Van Kampen replaced her in the third and could not stop the American offense either.
