The former Major League infielder Frank Menechino, who played the first half of the season for DANESI NETTUNO in the Italian Baseball League, found a new job. The NEW YORK YANKEES hired him to take over as hitting coach for their Double-A affiliate TRENTON THUNDER in the Eastern League next year.
Menechino, who batted .240 in 449 Major League games for OAKLAND and TORONTO in the American League, came to Europe last winter, but only was limited to 18 games due to problems with a hernia disc. The 37-year-old batted .274 (OBP .372/SLG .411) with one homerun, ten runs scored and 13 RBIs for the Italian vice champion. He was replaced by Luis Ugueto.
Menechino now joins the most storied franchise to begin his coaching career. It will be his second stint with the club, as he played a few games for the COLUMBUS CLIPPERS in 2006, which then was the Triple-A affiliate of the YANKEES. He will work under returning manager Tony Franklin, who led TRENTON to consecutive championships in the Eastern League the past two years.
