The Dutch World Baseball Classic team stays unbeaten in Florida. On Wednesday they celebrated a 4-0 shutout against the Manatee Community College at the Robert Wynn Field in Bradenton. According to the game report from Rogier van Zorn of Honkbalsite.com the pitchers Tom Stuifbergen, Juan Carlos Sulbaran, Dennis Neuman, Diegomar Markwell, Berry van Driel, Pim Walsma and Nick Stuifbergen combined to throw a two-hit shutout.
Van Driel allowed the only two hits against the Netherlands, both coming in the seventh inning. The seven pitchers also didn’t induce any walks and struck out eleven batters of the Lancers. Sulbaran had the most impressive outing, striking out the side in the third frame. The offense provided the necessary run support in the first two innings, taking an early 4-0 lead. Eugene Kingsale, Sharnol Adriana and Sharlon Schoop each had two hits, Danny Rombley, Bryan Engelhardt and Vince Rooi connected once.
The Netherlands National Team had won the first exhibition game against the Eckerd College last Saturday. Two ties followed versus a Korean professional team and the University of South Florida. After five days of practice they will face three Major League teams in three days next week to conclude the preparation for the 2009 WBC. Pitcher Rick van den Hurk (Marlins), infielder Hainley Statia (Angels) and outfielder Gregory Halman (Mariners), who are all on 40-man rosters of MLB teams, will join the squad of manager Rod Delmonico on Saturday.
