The Belgian First Division club NAMUR ANGELS brings in two college ball proven players to reinforce their roster for the upcoming season. They acquire pitcher Zachary Potter from the State University of New York in New Paltz (NCAA Division III) and second baseman/relief pitcher Henry Perkins from the Columbia University (NCAA Division I) in New York City to replace Caleb Calarco, Erik Hufnagel and Morgan Brown.
Potter is a right-handed pitcher and outfielder from Pine Plains, New York. In 2008 he had a 7-1 record with an ERA of 2.30 in nine games for the New Paltz Hawks. He completed seven of them and had 87 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings, while walking 25. Opponents batted .203 against him. At the plate he had a .205 batting average (OBP .220/SLG .333) in twelve games.
Perkins from Skaneateles, New York was a three-sport star (baseball, hockey, soccer) before going to Columbia in 2005. He led the team with a .363 batting average (OBP .430/SLG .554) in 2008. He hit three homeruns, six triples, 16 doubles, scored 41 runs and drove in 34 in 52 games. As spot starter he had a 0-1 record and an ERA of 1.91 in seven appearances (five starts) with 25 strikeouts (11 BB) in 28 1/3 innings. After the 2008 season Perkins took home All-Ivy Player of the Year honors and was named to the All-Ivy First Team.
The ANGELS will start their preseason schedule on March 14/15 with exhibition games against LOUVAIN LA NEUVE and the PORT OF ANTWERP GREYS. The team is also going to participate in tournaments in Cologne (GER), Rotterdam (NED) and Borgerhout (BEL), and will plays additional warm-ups against the MERCHTEM CATS and BRUSSELS KANGAROOS.
