After getting crushed on Friday, the Mexican National Team came right back on Sunday to beat the Colorado Rockies in Tucson, Arizona 2-1.
Mexico’s pitching staff around starter Walter SILVA showed an impressive performance against a Lineup filled with MLB regulars Willy TAVERAS, Matt HOLLIDAY, Todd HELTON and Brad HAWPE. SILVA (W 1-0) allowed two hits and four walks in 4 2/3 scoreless innings. The reliever Pablo ORTEGA, David CORTES and Rafael DIAZ (save) for 3 2/3 perfect innings, striking out five. Only Edgar HUERTA was charged with a run on three hits and a base on balls in two thirds of an inning.
Ivan TERRAZAS hit a leadoff triple against Rockies starter Jeff FRANCIS (L 0-1) in the third and scored on a sac fly by Albino CONTRERAS. Carlos VALENCIA drove in the second run with a RBI-single. Christian PRESICHI doubled twice.
Mexico travels now to Taiwan to open the Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Friday against Canada.
