Martijn Meeuwis ends National Team Career

Martijn Meeuwis ends National Team Career

The 27-year-old catcher/outfielder Martijn Meeuwis ended his Dutch National Team career after only 30 games. His club, DOOR Neptunus, announced his decision on its website. He is going to focus on his job at a bulb distributor in Oosterhout, Netherlands and his family, but will also continue to play for Neptunus.

Meeuwis was part of the national team since July 2007, when Robert Eenhoorn nominated him for the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam. He also took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the 2007 Baseball World Cup in Taiwan, the 2008 Haarlem Baseball Week and the World Port Tournament last summer. During the 2009 World Baseball Classic and the 2009 Baseball World Cup Meeuwis served as bullpen catcher for the national team.

The right-handed batter also played for HCAW in the Dutch Hoofdklasse, before he joined Neptunus for the 2007 season. Last year Meeuwis batted .230 (OBP .329/SLG .274) with two triples, two doubles, 22 runs scored and 14 RBI for the team of head coach Steve Janssen, winning the championship.
