Major League Baseball announces players for the 2009 MLB European Academy

Press Release Major League Baseball International

Major League Baseball (MLB) has selected 55 players to attend the 2009 MLB European Academy in Tirrenia, Italy from August 11 – 29. The players are between the ages of 15 and 19 years-old and hail from 12 different countries around Europe and Africa.

Players attending the Academy will take part in an intensive three-week training program that includes skills instruction, strength and conditioning work and a full schedule of games. The program will be run by top Major League instructors, including John McLaren, Bruce Hurst, Lee Smith, Barry Larkin, Wally Joyner, Garth Iorg, Brent Mayne, German Geigel and Jeff Krushell.

The selected players were chosen by the MLB Scouting Bureau based on their performance at seven tryouts held in various European cities last May.

The MLB European Academy is the centerpiece of MLB’s commitment to provide promising young players with the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Academy brings together the brightest up-and-coming talents in Europe and Africa with the best in Major League coaching and instruction. Since its inception in 2005, 158 players from 25 nations have attended the Academy, with 34 of those players going on to sign professional contracts with MLB clubs.
