The former first baseman of Kotlarka Praha and member of the Czech national junior team Jakub SLADEK signed a professional contract with the Philadelphia Phillies organisation. SLADEK is 17 years old and he played for the Tegola Titans in 2007 with a batting average of .200 (SLG .267).
He will attend spring training camp with the other minor leaguers of the Phillies. After that he is returning to Europe, playing for the German Bundesliga team Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg. He will finish school in 2009 and will move into the United States definitively afterwards.

Sladek is not the first European to sign with the Phillies. The Dutch Michael Crouwel played Rookie- and A-ball with the Phillies in 1992.
