Like numerous times before this season Jair Jurrjens pitched well enough to deserve the win, but was left with a no decision in the end. However the Braves rallied after his departure and won 10-2 against the Blue Jays, which is all that matters. Jurrjens allowed eight hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out three. 66 of his 102 pitches were strikes and his ERA (2.07) remains pretty low. He induced 13 groundouts, opposed to just two in the air. Atlanta used a seven-run seventh, highlighted by Brian McCann’s second homer of the day to seal the win.
Nationals’ starter Shairon Martis on the other hand remains without a loss in the 2009 campaign. Nevertheless his start on Sunday wasn’t the kind of a brilliant nature. In six-plus innings he gave up seven hits, five runs and two bb against the Orioles. He struck out two. 52 of his effective 89 pitches were strikes. For the seventh time in eight starts he has reached at least the sixth inning, taking pressure from the depleted bullpen of Washington. Adam Dunn’s grand slam in the seventh helped the Nats to an 8-5 victory against Baltimore. Martis, who has an ERA of 4.86, got the no-decision.
