Shairon Martis received another no decision in his latest start for the Nationals on Wednesday. He lasted seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on a homerun by Jay Bruce in the second, plus two more hits and two walks. He struck out one and lowered his ERA to 5.04. Washington eventually would tie the contest through RBI singles by Josh Bard and Alberto Gonzalez in the bottom of the ninth. But they lost in the end anyway, as Jonny Gomes and Jerry Hairston Jr. drove in two runs in the top of the twelfth against reliever Jason Bergmann. They are now 15-42 for the season.
Jair Jurrjens also started at home on Wednesday, facing the Pittsburgh Pirates. The right-hander of the Atlanta Braves issued four hits, two runs and three walks in six innings, while striking out seven. He lost for the fourth time this season and is now 5-4 with an ERA of 2.85. The Pirates won by a final score of 3-2. Jurrjens threw 74 of his 111 pitches for strikes and left the game, trailing 1-2.
