Jair Jurrjens had one of his best starts this season Wednesday, when he and his Braves beat last year’s National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum and the Giants 4-2. Jurrjens allowed just three hits, a run and a walk in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and lowered his ERA to 2.67. His record improved to 9-7, as the offense provided him enough run support this time. Yunel Escobar had the big hit with a three-run homerun in the third. Jurrjens threw 112 pitches, 76 for strikes.
Around the Minors:
- The season for German first baseman Donald Lutz is likely over, as he broke his hand on a back swing on Wednesday and will have surgery on Thursday. Depending on the rehab there might be an outside shot that he is available for the German National Team in the IBAF Baseball World Cup in September, though the Cincinnati Reds might don’t allow his participation due to the injury. Lutz was batting .169 (OBP .246/SLG .305) with four of his ten hits going for extra bases. Two weeks ago he hit for the cycle.
