The Italian World Baseball Classic team played another unofficial warm-up game on Wednesday. In Jupiter, Florida they defeated a selection of the Florida Marlins 4-1 in six innings. On Tuesday they were shut out by the Baltimore Orioles 4-0.
The Major League club put the first run on the board in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by shortstop Manuel Mayorson. But Italy fought back, scoring two runs each in the next two frames for a 4-1 advantage. Jack Santoro and Giuseppe Mazzanti (RBI) had a double, a single and a run each in three at bats. Mike Costanzo, Alex Liddi and Joseph Mazzuca got the other RBIs.
Marc La Macchia received the starting nod for Italy against his regular team and pitched two flawless innings, striking out three. Roberto Corradini allowed the lone run of the Marlins on two singles and a stolen base. Cody Cillo, Chris Cooper and Kasey Olenberger combined for the last three innings, inducing two more hits and a walk. Florida sent Burke Badenhop, Eulogio De La Cruz, Dallas Trahern, Mike Wood and Scott Proctor to the mound.
Italy takes Thursday off, only the pitchers Alex Maestri, B.J. La Mura and Tiago Da Silva will drive to the ballpark with catchers Riccardo Bertagnon and Luis Camargo to get some work in. The team will face a New York Mets squad on February 27th in another scrimmage before the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
