Italian Baseball Week 2010: Recaps Day 3

While Sweden took an early 5-0 lead midway through the second inning on day three of the 2010 Italian Baseball Week on Sunday, Spain picked up the pace and celebrated a 15-5 win in seven innings in the end. They tied the game in the fourth and put it away with four runs in the fifth and six in the sixth. Richard Montiel hit a two-run homerun in the sixth and drove in five overall. Daniel Martinez drove in three. Marc Carrillo crossed the plate three times for the team of manager Mauro Mazzotti. Dennis Cook’s squad was led by Magnus Pilegård, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a runs and a RBI.

Both starting pitchers struggled, as the coaching staffs try to find a possible rotation for the upcoming European Championship. Manu Olivera (ESP) conceded eight hits, five runs and a walk in three innings for Spain. Nick Soubiea (SWE) began for Sweden and surrendered eight hits, nine runs (7 ER) and two bb in four-plus innings. Lowuin Sacramento made his debut for Spain and picked up the win after giving up just one hit and a walk in three scoreless innings of relief.

Italy improved to 3-0 at the Italian Baseball Week with an 11-1 victory in eight innings against the Czech Republic. Five runs in the eighth led to the early ending due to ten-run rule. The Italian offense picked up 17 hits in the game, three each by Tony Coromato, Tony Granato (3 RBI) and Laidel Chapelli. Giuseppe Mazzanti hit a solo homerun. Jakub Malik drove in the lone Czech run with a RBI groundout in the first.

Riccardo De Santis (ITA) received the starting nod from Italy’s manager Marco Mazzieri. He conceded just two hits and a run in four strong innings, striking out four. Cody Cillo (W) followed him with four Ks in three scoreless frames. Boris Bokaj (L) allowed five runs on ten hits in five innings. It was just his second loss of the season.
