DOOR NEPTUNUS opened the 2009 Holland Series with a lopsided 16-0 blowout against the KONICA MINOLTA PIONIERS on Thursday at the Familiestadion in Rotterdam, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Games two and three will follow on Saturday and Sunday.
NEPTUNUS took a fast 1-0 lead in the opening period after Benjamin Dille reached with a triple and scored on a single by Sharnol Adriana. They added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Jeroen Sluijter. The team from Rotterdam blew the game wide open in the fifth, sending 16 batters to the plate to put twelve runs on the board. Amazingly they needed just five hits for the run barrage thanks to five walks and three errors in the frame. Another run in the 6th finalized the score.
Sluijter finished with three hits, including two doubles, and five RBI. Jeffrey Arends scored three times. Ten players scored at least a run. Diegomar Markwell (W 1-0) dominated on the mound, allowing just four hits in seven scoreless innings. He struck out six and threw a total of 107 pitches. Shane Gnade (L 0-1) got the starting nod, issuing seven hits, seven runs (6 ER) and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. Relievers Daan de Jong and Dennis Buring didn’t get much help from their defense and surrendered nine more runs, just two of them were earned.
