On Saturday Boston College and the Texas Longhorns battled in an epic 25-innnig marathon during the NCAA playoffs. In his twelfth at bat Travis Tucker decided the outcome with a RBI single for a 3-2 win (box score). A sad side note was the usage of two relievers by the two head coaches, though both performances were pretty impressive. The regular Texas’ closer Austin Wood pitched 13 innings of relief, including the first 12 1/3 without allowing a hit. His 169 pitches however were pretty irresponsible. Mike Belfiore of the Eagles threw 129 pitches in 9 2/3 innings of relief. In Europe we sadly see such pitch counts quite often, but these two kids are usually short relievers and not trained for suchong outings. Wood is considered one of the better prospects in next week’s MLB amateur draft.
