The CAPITALS lost their last chance to clinch a playoff spot through own power and dropped to fifth following a 1-11 loss to the ALLIGATORS in a makeup game of the first game day. They finished the regular season with a 14-14 record and now have to hope for three losses by the CARDINALS this weekend. SOLINGEN already led 2-1, when they decided the outcome through a five-run fourth.

Andre Hughes (W 10-1) won the duel against Tim Henkenjohann (L 1-2). ALLIGATOR’s shortstop Chris Beck went four-for five with three runs scored and three RBI. Beck also closed out the contest on the mound with three strikeouts in the eighth. Dominik Wulf also drove in two. Hughes pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks. Henkenjohann gave up seven hits, seven runs (2 ER) and five base on balls in 3 2/3 innings.

Not only won MAINZ both games against REGENSBURG the past weekend, they also got one victory extra. The German Baseball and Softball Federation ruled in favor of the A’s following a protest against game one of the first doubleheader between these two teams in May, when the LEGIONAERE had a pitcher on the mound, who was not on the lineup card before the start of the game, although he left before even throwing a pitch.

The ATHLETICS received a brilliant effort by Manuel Moeller (W 7-5) in the first match, who led them to a 4-0 shutout. He allowed just three hits and four walks in a complete game, while striking out nine. He lowered his ERA to 2.82 with the outing. Mike Larson was responsible for the necessary run support, as he hit a solo homerun and scored twice. Shu Sasaki also had a RBI. Philipp Hoffschild (L 6-1) lost for the first time this season. He was charged with two hits, one run and a walk in 3 1/3 innings. Mike Bolsenbroek followed him on the mound, striking out seven in 4 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up three hits, three runs (1 ER) and four bb.

The second game was much closer. Martin Kipphan delivered the decisive hit for MAINZ, when he drove in Larson with a walk off RBI double. The Canadian outfielder had reached through a leadoff triple. He also hit his fourth homerun of the season earlier in the game. REGENSBURG had tied the score in the top of the sixth on an error by center fielder Hendrik Schewe and a sac fly by pinch hitter Martin Helmig. Nils Hartkopf (W 5-2) struck out 17 in a complete game victory. He allowed six hits, three runs (2 ER) and two walks. Craig Crow (REG) struck out ten in five-plus innings, allowing five hits, three runs (1 ER) and two bb. He was ejected in the top of the sixth after hitting Max Boldt with a pitch. Martin Almstetter (L 4-4) replaced him and took the loss.

Mannheim Tornados – Gauting Indians 9-1, 12-1

The TORNADOS only needed one game to clinch a spot in the playoffs mathematically. They swept the doubleheader against the INDIANS 9-3 and 12-1 to bring their record to 16-10. They need two victories next weekend in the rematch of the duel to move into third place of the standings.

In the first game Chris Falls hit a three-run homerun in the third and drove in four to lead MANNHEIM to a 9-3 win. Rene Franke drove in two. Marvin Appiah went three-for-four with two runs scored. Paul Waterman (W 3-0) allowed just one hit and six walks in six innings, striking out four. Georg Starek (L 0-2) gave up seven hits, six runs (2 ER) and a bb in five-plus innings.

The TORNADOS needed just seven innings to win the second match 12-1. Martin Dewald (2-4, 3 RBI) and Craig Pycock (1-1, 2 BB, 2 Runs) hit homeruns. Jens Heymer drove in two. Eddie Aucoin (W 8-3) picked up the win with twelve strikeouts in six two-hit innings. Matt Fuller (L 7-3) was charged with nine hits, ten runs (9 ER) and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Haar Disciples – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 3-4, 3-14

HAA 001 101 0   3  4 5

The HEIDEKOEPFE clinched first place in the southern conference standings of the Baseball-Bundesliga with two victories in HAAR. Both clubs are scheduled to conclude the regular season on Saturday in Heidenheim.

HEIDENHEIM needed a solo homerun by Simon Guehring (2-4) in the top of the eighth to win 4-3 in the first match. The DISCIPLES had tied the contest a frame before on RBI hits by Moritz Polixa, Tony Younis and Adalberto Paulino. Peter Dankerl (W 10-1) allowed nine hits, three runs and two walks in seven solid innings. Dirk Fries (HAA) gave up seven hits and three walks in seven innings. Gregor Klinc (L 2-3) took the loss.

The second part of the doubleheader was over shortly after the beginning, when the HEIDEKOEPFE scored seven runs in the first two frames. Ryan Lilly had three hits, two runs and two RBI to lead the offense. Guehring and Dankerl also drove in two each. Nate Fish had two RBI for HAAR. Mike Hartley (W 2-0) allowed three hits, two runs and two walks in five innings. Esequier Pie (L 2-3) hit two batters in the first and gave up four runs on two hits to leave the game after three outs. Clemens Cichocki could not stop the guest offense either.
