Germany loses 1-2 in extra-innings

GER 000 001 000 0 1 5 2
CAN 000 010 000 1 2 6 1

It was another good game for the German team. However they lost to Canada 1-2 through a bases-loaded walk with two outs by Emerson FROSTAD in the bottom of the tenth. It was the sixth win for the Olympics participant and secures the top spot in the tournament.

The few people in attendance saw a thrilling pitching duel with only a few scoring chances. Canada got on the board first, when David CORRENTE connected for a solo-homerun into the upper deck of the left field stands. But Germany answered right away. Kai GRONAUER hit a double, with the center fielder misreading the ball. Pinch hitter Jendrick SPEER followed with double himself to drive in GRONAUER. He later was tagged out at home, trying to score from second on a single by Simon GUEHRING.

Both teams had a few more opportunities to score but failed. Germany loaded the bases in third, Canada in the seventh and ninth frame. The match eventually went into extra-innings.

Canada loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth through a walk, an error and an intentional walk. Reliever Dirk FRIES got two outs on an infield fly and when Stubby CLAPP (injured on the slide) was called out at home. What followed was the aforementioned bases-loaded walk, which ended the contest.

Germany’s starter Andre HUGHES, who already had impressed against Chinese Taipei, showed another great performance on the mound. He went 8 1/3 innings, allowing just six hits, one run and two walks. He struck out seven with his pitches of about 62 to 77 miles per hour. FRIES replaced him with three runners on and one out in the ninth. He induced a force out at home and a fly out into center field. But he got in trouble himself in the tenth and took the loss.

Brooks MC NIVEN started for Canada and gave up two hits and two base on balls in four innings. Steve GREEN received the win after striking out the side in the top of the tenth.
